She Wasn’t the First Woman in Space… But What She Did There Changed Everything
When the world celebrated the first woman in space back in 1963, many people quietly assumed the barrier had been broken. The headlines ran, the applause faded, and history slipped back into its old habit of being written mostly around men. But being the first to reach a place and being trusted to do its most demanding work are two very different things. And twenty-one years later, a second Soviet woman would prove exactly that — not simply by reaching space, but by stepping out into the open void of it.
On July 25, 1984, cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya opened the hatch of the Salyut 7 space station and floated outside into the darkness, becoming the first woman ever to perform a spacewalk. There was no protective capsule around her. No walls. Just a tether, a pressurized suit, and the absolute silence of orbit, more than two hundred miles above the Earth turning slowly beneath her. And she was not out there simply to make history. Here is what most people miss about Svetlana Savitskaya: long before she became a cosmonaut, she was already one of the Soviet Union’s most accomplished pilots. As a teenager, she completed hundreds of parachute jumps and trained at the Moscow Aviation Institute. She became a test pilot, set multiple aviation records, and in 1970 won the World Aerobatic Championship, mastering demanding precision maneuvers at the highest level of competition. She was also the daughter of a celebrated Soviet air force commander and decorated war hero, which inevitably led to speculation that her family background had helped open doors. But her own record in aviation was substantial. She had spent years proving herself in the cockpit before she ever earned a place in a spacecraft.

Her spacewalk was demanding technical work. Outside Salyut 7, Savitskaya and her crewmate Vladimir Dzhanibekov tested a remarkable device known as the Universal Hand Tool — a portable instrument designed to cut, weld, solder, and coat metal in the vacuum of space. Engineers on the ground had concerns about whether the intense heat generated during the work could damage the cosmonauts’ suits. It did not. Savitskaya methodically cut samples of titanium and stainless steel, welded metal, and applied coatings while drifting weightlessly in an environment where an unprotected human could not survive. The experiment had an important purpose: to demonstrate that people could eventually build and repair structures in orbit, a capability that would become increasingly important for future space stations. And the first person trusted to demonstrate that capability outside a spacecraft was a woman.
There was also a Cold War dimension to the timing. Soviet planners knew that NASA was preparing to send astronaut Kathryn Sullivan on the first American woman’s spacewalk. The Soviet Union did not want the United States to claim another milestone, so the mission was moved forward. Savitskaya completed her spacewalk roughly three months before Sullivan. The geopolitical competition helped determine the timing, but once she was outside the station, the achievement depended entirely on her training and skill. That 1984 mission was a double landmark. Savitskaya had already become the second woman in space in 1982. Now, aboard Soyuz T-12, she became the first woman to travel to space twice and the first woman to perform a spacewalk. She was later considered for an all-female mission to Salyut 7, which could have made her the first woman to command a space mission. That flight was ultimately cancelled, leaving one of the more intriguing possibilities in spaceflight history unrealized.
For decades, her name remained in the shadow of louder Cold War stories and more familiar figures. In the West especially, Svetlana Savitskaya is far less remembered than she deserves to be. Yet every woman who has since stepped through an airlock to repair equipment, install hardware, or help build a structure in orbit is following a path she helped establish. She transformed the idea of “a woman can go to space” into something much bigger: “a woman can perform some of the most demanding work in space.” History loves to remember the first person to arrive somewhere. But sometimes the greater breakthrough belongs to the person who came next, stepped through the hatch, and proved that reaching the destination was only the beginning.
