Why Was This Brilliant Woman Called the “Mother of Hubble”?

A physics department head once tried to talk her out of pursuing astronomy altogether. Nancy Grace Roman ignored him, helped build NASA’s astronomy program from the ground up, and decades later, nearly eight years after her death, she is finally getting a spacecraft named in her honor.

She was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 16, 1925. Her mother would take her outside at night to point out the constellations and, on lucky evenings, the Northern Lights. Most of what her mother showed her didn’t stick. The stars did. By the age of 11, Nancy had already organized her own astronomy club at school, gathering classmates to learn constellations most adults never bothered to name.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in astronomy from Swarthmore College in 1946, despite the head of the physics department actively discouraging women from studying the field. She went on to earn a doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1949. Neither degree came with any guarantee of opportunity. In the mid-20th century, a woman with a PhD in astronomy still had to fight for a place in the room.

She spent the next six years at Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin as an assistant professor, carrying out important research. In 1950, she discovered that the emission spectrum of the star AG Draconis had completely changed from earlier observations, a state the star enters only a few percent of the time. It was the kind of discovery that could quickly raise a scientist’s profile. Yet it did little to change her prospects. Roman realized there was essentially no path to tenure for a woman in American astronomy at the time, and she was earning roughly two-thirds of what a man in a comparable position made.

In 1954, she moved to the Naval Research Laboratory, where she spent three years mapping the Milky Way using radio waves and helping develop radar techniques for measuring the distance to the Moon. It was highly technical and largely unglamorous work, but the experience would later prove invaluable.

Then, in 1959, everything changed.

After a lecture by chemist Harold Urey, a man named Jack Clark approached Roman and asked whether she knew anyone who might be interested in helping build a program for space-based astronomy at a brand-new agency called NASA, founded only months earlier.

Roman thought about it, then applied for the job herself.

She joined NASA in February 1959, becoming its first female executive and, soon after, its first Chief of Astronomy. From that position, she helped fund and shape astronomical research at an agency that was still barely old enough to have an established identity.

But the hardest problem Roman faced was not scientific. It was political.

Ground-based telescopes had enormous limitations. Earth’s atmosphere blocks large portions of the light arriving from space, and even the best observatories cannot observe continuously. The idea of placing a telescope above the atmosphere had been proposed as early as 1946 by astronomer Lyman Spitzer. Turning that idea into a government-funded reality, however, would take years of persuasion.

Roman became one of its most determined advocates.

In 1971, she helped establish the Large Space Telescope Science Steering Group, bringing together astronomers and engineers from across the country. She argued against competing proposals, including ideas for placing a telescope on the Moon, and spent years making the scientific case to NASA officials, politicians, and influential supporters.

She even attended dinners hosted by NASA Administrator James Webb, explaining the value of a space-based observatory to politically connected guests who had never considered the idea before.

Throughout the 1970s, Roman continued writing congressional testimony and fighting to keep the project funded. The telescope’s original cost was estimated at roughly $2 billion, while construction and decades of servicing missions eventually pushed the total cost far higher.

Yet Roman never considered the telescope her personal achievement.

In fact, she disliked being called the “Mother of Hubble.” She repeatedly emphasized that the telescope was the result of a much larger team of scientists, engineers, administrators, and supporters. Her greatest contribution was not simply imagining the telescope, but organizing the people and building the political support necessary to make it possible.

Her NASA career extended beyond Hubble.

She championed the International Ultraviolet Explorer, a joint NASA-ESA-UK mission, and supported the Cosmic Background Explorer, which measured the faint radiation left over from the Big Bang. Two of the scientists who led that work later shared the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Roman retired from NASA in 1979, but her work did not stop there. She continued consulting, teaching, and encouraging women to pursue careers in science.

She died on Christmas Day in 2018, at the age of 93.

Neither the Hubble Space Telescope nor the James Webb Space Telescope carries her name. But her legacy has finally received a fitting tribute.

NASA’s newest flagship space observatory was renamed the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope in her honor. Now, nearly eight years after her death, the spacecraft is preparing for launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Florida, with a mission to investigate dark energy, the accelerating expansion of the universe, and planets orbiting distant stars.

The woman who spent decades convincing the world that space telescopes were worth building is finally getting one that bears her name.

She spent a lifetime looking up, so the rest of us could see farther.
