The Song Born From a Dream That Changed Everything
Some songs are carefully planned.
Others seem to arrive from somewhere completely unexpected.
And then there are songs that begin with a dream.
In 1969, during one of the most difficult periods of his life, a troubled songwriter fell asleep and dreamed about someone he had lost many years earlier.
It was his mother.

She had died when he was only 14, and seeing her again in the dream brought him an overwhelming sense of peace. She seemed to know that he was struggling and reassured him that everything would be alright.
When he woke up, the feeling stayed with him.
And so did the message.
Let it be.
He went to the piano and began writing.
What emerged would eventually become one of the most recognizable and comforting songs in music history.
The person in the dream was Mary McCartney, the songwriter’s mother. The name “Mother Mary” in the lyrics therefore had a deeply personal meaning, although listeners later interpreted it in a religious sense as well. The songwriter himself has said he was perfectly comfortable with people hearing the song that way.
But the song was created during a turbulent time.
The band was under enormous pressure, relationships within the group were becoming increasingly complicated, and the recording sessions themselves were far from easy. The project that became Let It Be began in January 1969, initially intended to document the group rehearsing and eventually performing together.
Amid all that tension came a song about acceptance.
Not giving up.
Not pretending everything is perfect.
Simply finding the strength to accept that some things cannot be controlled.

When the single was released on March 6, 1970, it quickly became a major success. The album followed in May, becoming the band’s final album to be released before their breakup.
And that’s what makes the story even more remarkable.
The song wasn’t created to become a farewell.
It wasn’t written as a statement about the band’s breakup.
It began with something much more intimate:
A son dreaming about his mother.
A moment of comfort.
A memory from childhood returning at exactly the moment he needed it.
Over the decades, millions of listeners have found their own meaning in the song.
For some, it is about faith.
For others, acceptance.
For someone grieving, it can feel like a message from a person they wish they could see one more time.
And for others, it’s simply a reminder that sometimes the only thing we can do when life becomes overwhelming is take a breath and keep going.
Perhaps that’s why the song has remained so powerful.
Because the story behind it is incredibly personal, yet the feeling is universal.
Almost everyone has experienced a moment when they wished someone could simply tell them that everything was going to be alright.
For one songwriter, that reassurance came in a dream.
He woke up, sat at the piano, and turned that moment into music.
More than five decades later, people are still listening.
And perhaps every time those familiar opening notes begin, someone somewhere remembers a person they lost, a difficult moment they survived, or a time when they desperately needed to hear the same words:
Let it be.
