Who doesn’t love the great country legends Backstreet Boys? Oh wait… Well, for one night we got to hear what it’d sound like if the biggest boy band of all time were a country act. Backstreet Boys sang with Florida Georgia Line and their band to bring a country flavor to the iconic classic “I Want It That Way,” and the crossover worked better than you might guess! How can a performance be so nostalgic and so fresh at the same time?
Whoever had the idea of expanding the Backstreet Boys’ vocal line to a seven-piece, with this kind of talent, was really cooking. The way Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley add some delicious twang to the ‘90s classic is really satisfying to listen to. The Music Man has to say when you have a song as timeless as “I Want it That Way,” you can really take it somewhere special with this kind of creative arrangement.
Backstreet Boys and Florida Georgia Line teamed up to perform “I Want it That Way” for CMT Crossroads, and their collab hit 2.3 million views on YouTube. Viewers found a lot to enjoy here, and added comments such as “BSB and FGL did more than just collaborate on a song. They took the opportunity to enjoy the crossover in each other’s genre” and “The 14-year-old in me is screaming with happiness! This is what being a ‘90s kid is all about!”
The CMT Crossroads collab is not the first time Backstreet Boys have crossed into country. One of the greatest collaborations the five-piece ever did was when they teamed up with Shania Twain on “From This Moment On.” Shania is an incredible live vocalist, and hearing her duet in turn with each of the Backstreet Boys was just heaven to the ears. Both Shania and the boys were at their commercial peak at the 1999 concert, making it an incredible document of one of the greatest moments of ‘90s pop.
Backstreet Boys dropped “I Want It That Way” on April 12, 1999. The song was written by Swedish super producers Andreas Carlsson and Max Martin. “I Want It That Way” became the band’s biggest hit and topped the charts in more than 25 countries, including major markets like Germany, the UK, and Italy. It has since become their signature song and a classic of the era. “I Want It That Way” has become a sign of Backstreet Boys’ influence, as it has been covered or parodied by many other artists, including One Direction, JLS, and Blink-182.
